186 elephants killed on rail track in a decade
Why is it in News?
- A total 186 elephants were killed after hit by trains across India between 2009-10 and 2020-21.
Details:
- Data is published by the Project Elephant division of the Ministry.
- Deaths were highest in 2012-13 where total 27 elephants were killed in 10 states.
- Permanent coordination committee was formed between the Ministry of Railways and MoEFCC for preventing elephants’ accidental deaths by trains.
- Measures taken:
(1) Formation of coordination committees of officers of Indian Railways and State forest departments.
(2) Clearing of vegetation along railways tracks to enable clear view for loco pilots.
(3) Using signage points at suitable points
(4) Moderating slopes of elevated sections of rail tracks
(5) Setting up of underpass or overpass for safe passage for elephants
(6) Regulation of train speed from sunset to sunrise in vulnerable stretches
(7) Regular patrolling of vulnerable stretches
