Protection of Mahanadi floodplain
Why is it in News?
- NGT has constituted a high level committee to identify floodplain zones of Mahanadi.
Details:
- Committee was the response to Odisha government’s reclamation of 424 acres of land from river for development of project.
- It has been criticized on the ground of damage to reiver ecology.
- State government stand:
(1) Land reclaimed would be utilized for ecological, recreational, sporting, cultural, technological values of lives of the people of the Cuttack.
- Mahanadi:
(1) It rises in the hills of southeastern Chhattisgarh state.
(2) It is one of the most-active silt-depositing streams in the Indian subcontinent.
(3) After receiving the Seonath River, it turns east and enters Odisha state, its flow augmented by the drainage of hills to the north and south.
(4) At Sambalpur the Hirakud Dam on the river has formed a man-made lake 35 miles (55 km) long.
(5) The river flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
(6) The Mahanadi is called 'the sorrow of Orissa' d devastating floods.
(7) Hirakud Dam, network of canals, barrages and check dams ha now controlled the flood situation.
