Curving waves of Atlantic Region

Why is it in News?
  • Study by Bangalore scientists reveled that in addition to El-Nino, ‘curving waves’ of Atlantic Region might be responsible for droughts in India.
Details:
  • Observations:
(1) In past century, 6 out of the 10 droughts in Non-el Nino years is related to disturbances to North Atlantic Region.
(2) Rainfall will appear and weaken in mid-June.
(3) Rainfall recovers from mid-July to mid-August.
(4) In the third week, there was a sudden decline in rainfall.
  • Rossby wave:
(1) Winds in the upper atmosphere is interacting with the deep cyclonic circulation above the abnormally cold north Atlantic waters.
(2) Resulting wave of air currents is called Rossby wave.
(3) It was curved down from the North Atlantic squeezed in by the Tibetan Pleatue.
(4) It hit the subcontinent around mid-August and drive out Monsoon.
