India is on track to reduce emissions

Why is it in News?
  • “India is the only major G20 country that was on track in keeping its NDCs in case of Green House Gases.” – Environment Minister
Details:
  • Achievements:
(1) India had achieved 21% of the emission intensity targets as a proportion of its GDP.
(2) Share of renewables in our energy mix is 37.9%.
(3) Tree cover has been increased by 15000 sq km in 6 years.
  • Paris Agreement UNFCCC adopted in 2015 to improve upon and replace the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Aims:
(1) Limit the increase of global temperatures to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels and efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C.
(2) Reach global peaking of GHG emissions & rapid reductions thereafter.
(3) Achieve a balance after 2050 between atmospheric inputs of greenhouse gases by emission sources and removal into sinks.
  • India’s NDCs under Paris Agreement:
(1) Reduction of emission intensity of GDP by 33-35% below 2005 levels by 2030;
(2) 40% of electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030;
(3) Create forest & carbon sink equivalent to 2.5 - 3 billion tons of CO2 by 2030.
