People from the Kurmi community blocked railroad tracks in several locations in Eastern India in protest over not being recognised as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) and not having their language included in the Constitution's Eighth Schedule.

CONTEMPT OF COURT

Attorney General of India K K Venugopal has declined a request for consent to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against Kapil Sibal for certain remarks that he made during a speech on the subject of “Judicial Rollback of Civil Liberties”.

A Disruption-mukt Parliament

It was a four-day early finish to the Monsoon session of Parliament, which was disrupted by concerns such as rising prices, the suspension of 27 MPs, and the ED's action against some of the opposition leaders, among other things.

Supreme Court collegium

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana’s tenure is drawing to an end in a few days. The Ramana Collegium has been particularly successful. Meeting frequently and working quickly, they took the perennial problem of judicial vacancies by its horns and turned it around. The collegium, as a united front, was able to recommend numerous judicial appointments and scripted history by getting nine Supreme Court judges appointed in one go. Of the nine, Justice B.V. Nagarathna, is in line to be the first woman CJI in 2027

Judicial Appointments

Four years after the Supreme Court Collegium first recommended his name, the Union Law Ministry on notified the appointment of advocate Wasim Sadiq Nargal as an additional judge of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court. Further it has notified appointment of 8 new judges to various High Courts across the country and transfer of 6 judges across different High Courts.
