Supreme Court to protect Great Indian Bustard

Why is it in News?
  • Supreme Court asked to examine whether overhead power lines can be replaced with underground to save Great Indian Bustard (GIB) on priority basis.
Details:
  • Earlier, Environment ministry had launched unique initiative ‘Firefly Bird Diverter’ for Great Indian Bustard.
  • But recurring costs of diverter are more than installing & maintaining the diverters.
  • Supreme Court asked to examine possibility to install diverter at high voltage lines and to have underground cables at low voltage lines.
  • GIB:
(1) It is critically Threatened Species under ICUN list.
(2) Fewer than 150 birds are left in the world.
(3) The great Indian bustard inhabits dry grasslands and scrublands on the Indian subcontinent.
(4) Its largest populations are found in the Indian state of Rajasthan.
(5) Great Indian bustards are tall birds with long legs and a long neck.
(6) The sexes are roughly the same size.
(7) Males and females are distinguished by the colour of their feathers.
(8) Great Indian bustards are omnivores.
(9) They prey on various arthropods, worms, small mammals, small reptiles, insects such as locusts, crickets, and beetles.
