China defying Hong Kong joint treaty: U.K.
Why is it in news?
- Britain said China is no longer compliant with Hong Kong’s joint declaration, after Beijing announced sweeping changes to the region’s electoral system.
Details:
- China has recently imposed radical changes to restrict participation in Hong Kong’s electoral system.
- Britain has been a strong critic of China’s crackdown on pro-democracy campaigners in Hong Kong.
- Britain had angered China by announcing a visa scheme offering millions of Hong Kong residents a pathway to U.K.’s citizenship.
One country two system:
- The treaty was signed between Britain and China before Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997.
- The treaty guaranteed Hong Kong the special status, including a high degree of autonomy to manage its own affairs and the right to freedom of speech.
- However, British Foreign Secretary said that Beijing’s recent measures was a clear breach of the agreement.
