Reduction of protective buffer of Pulicat Wildlife sanctuary

Why is it in News?
  • Fishermen and environmentalists criticized the move of forest department to reduce protective buffer of Pulicat wildlife sanctuary from 10 km to 500 m.
Details:
  • Department approached the expert committee of the union environment ministry seeking notification to reduce protective buffer.
  • According to environmentalists, it would benefit only polluting industries.
  • Pulicat Wild Life Sanctuary:
(1) It is of 759 km² in size.
(2) It is located in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh and the Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu.
(3) It is the second largest brackish-water eco-system in India after Chilka lake in Orissa.
(4) It is notable for the many greater flamingos and other migratory birds.
