National Internet Exchange of India

The News

Two new Internet Exchange points (IXP) of NIXI will be opened in Durgapur and Bardhman by the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship.

It is a project that is part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) 1000-Day Vision.

About

NIXI is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in 2003. It was established with the intention of facilitating better internet services throughout the nation.

NIXI was established to enable Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to connect and peer with one another for the purpose of routing domestic traffic within the nation. Before, we had to travel all the way to the US or beyond.

Domestic peering will improve service quality (decrease latency) and result in lower bandwidth costs for ISPs because it uses less international bandwidth.

According to the best global norms for such initiatives, NIXI is run and maintained on a neutral basis.

Since 2003, it has been working to provide Indian individuals with access to the internet infrastructure through the following initiatives:

Internet exchanges that allow ISPs, Data Centers, and CDNs to exchange internet data.

In order to route domestic traffic domestically rather than internationally, the Internet Exchange Nodes have been successful in ensuring ISP peering among themselves. This has improved service quality (reduced latency) and resulted in lower bandwidth costs for ISPs by saving on international bandwidth.

Internationalized domain names (IDNs) and the.IN country code domain are managed and operated by the IN Registry.

The .in register has been handled by NIXI since 2005. (www.registry.in). Customers can register.in domain names with as many as 138 registrars around the world. This has aided in the growth of web hosting in the nation and the promotion of Indian language online content.

The top-level domain (TLD) for India is.in. Similar to.com,.in can be used for applications such as email and webpages. Up to December 2020, more than 24.23 lakh.in domain names have been registered. IDNs have been introduced in all 22 official languages, and more than 3,700 IDN domain names have already been registered.

National Internet Registry (NIR):

The National Internet Registry (NIR), formerly known as the Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers, has been operated by NIXI since March 2012. (IRINN). Within the nation, IP addresses and AS Numbers are assigned by IRINN.

Advantages of New NIXI

The opening of these new NIXI internet exchanges in the state will help to improve local Internet and broadband services as well as those in surrounding areas.

By improving their broadband services to their end users and changing the lives of the people in the area, the internet service providers connecting at these sites will gain.

Every sector of the state will benefit from the opening of these new IXPs, including MSMEs and other business sectors as well as the health, education, agricultural, and startup ecosystems.

Citizens will have greater access to government benefits and convenience, which will raise their standard of living. The two new Internet Exchange nodes from NIXI will undoubtedly improve the Internet ecosystem of the region.

Way Ahead

NIXI intends to establish such internet exchanges in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities soon in order to enhance the whole Indian internet ecosystem and provide internet users with access to it at a low cost with increased speed.
