China Red Cross sends help to India
Why is it in news?
- The first batch of oxygen concentrators and ventilators donated by the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) arrived in India.
Details:
- The equipment has come to help India fight against COVID-19.
- RCSC also decided to provide $1 million in cash assistance to the Indian Red Cross Society through International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC):
- IFRC is a global humanitarian organization.
- It was launched in 1919 in Paris, after world war 1.
- Its founding members are the national Red Cross societies of France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and the United States.
- It coordinates and directs international assistance following natural and man-made disasters in non-conflict situations.
- Its mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity.
- It is considered to be world's largest humanitarian network and is guided by seven Fundamental Principles.
- The IFRC works through its National Societies and with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
- Since 1994, the IFRC has had Observer status with the United Nations General Assembly.
- IFRC has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
