  • Supreme Court has asked Haryana government to submit affidavit against Delhi Jal Board accusations.
Details:
  • Delhi Jal Board stand:
(1) has accused Haryana government about release of untreated effluents into the water due to faulty treatment plants.
(2) It has increased the level of ammonia into the Yamuna.
(3) It has affected its water treatment plants and water quality.
(4) Upper riparian state is taking undue advantage of shared river for agricultural & industrial purposes.
(5) It is a violation of cooperative federalism.
  • Yamuna:
(1) It is the second-largest tributary river of the Ganga and the longest tributary in India.
(2) It originates from the Yamunotri Glacier at a height of 6,387 metres on the southwestern slopes of Banderpooch peaks of the Lower Himalaya in Uttarakhand.
(3) It merges with the Ganga at Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj, which is a site of the Kumbh Mela.
(4) It crosses several states: Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand Delhi.
(5) Its tributaries are Tons, Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, and Ken.
(6) At the Hathni Kund Barrage, its waters are diverted into two large canals: the Western Yamuna Canal flowing towards Haryana and the Eastern Yamuna Canal towards Uttar Pradesh.
