Deadlines of New emission norms by Coal-fired Power Plants
Why is it in News?
- Power ministry proposed to push deadlines back for adoption of new emission norms by coal-fired power plants.
Details:
- Unworkable time table might increase burden on utilities and might result into increase in tariffs.
- 2017 was the initial deadline for compliance of norms for instalment of Flue gas Desulphurization to cut sulphur dioxide emissions.
- Later deadlines changed until 2022 for different regions.
- Presently, no deadline is set.
- Major emissions from coal plants are emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitric oxide (NO).
