Track Pangolin poaching using social media

Why is it in News?
  • Odisha forest department stressed the need to track social media to track poaching of pangolin.
Details:
  • There are instances of trading pangolin & scales online forming WhatsApp group.
  • Indian Pangolin:
(1) Scientific name of the Indian pangolin is Manis crassicaudata.
(2) It is also called thick-tailed pangolin.
(3) It has scales which acts like an armour.
(4) It can also curl itself into a ball (volvation) as self-defence against predators such as the tiger.
(5) The colour of its scales varies depending on the colour of the earth in its surroundings.
(6) It is an insectivore, feeding on ants and termites.
(7) The Indian pangolin has been recorded in various forest types, including Sri Lankan rainforest and plains to middle hill levels
(8) The Indian pangolin is listed on CITES Appendix I since January 2017 and is protected in all range countries.
(9) It is an ‘endangered’ under IUCN category.
