Firefly Bird diverter

Why is it in News?
  • Environment ministry launched unique initiative ‘Firefly Bird Diverter’ for Great Indian Bustard.
Details:
  • It was launched in association with Wildlife Conservation society.
  • It is for overhead power lines in areas of Great Indian Bustard.
  • Why?
(1) High Transmission power lines are threat to GIB in Thar region.
(2) It is causing approx. 15% mortality rate in the region.
  • Firefly Bird Diverter:
(1) Flaps are installed on power lines as a reflector for bird species like GIB.
(2) Birds spot it at distance of 50 m and change the course.
(3) But for larger birds, it is difficult to change the course because of body weight and other factors.
(4) It is called fireflies as they look like fireflies from distance.
  • GIB:
(1) It is critically Threatened Species under ICUN list.
(2) Fewer than 150 birds are left in the world.
(3) The great Indian bustard inhabits dry grasslands and scrublands on the Indian subcontinent.
(4) Its largest populations are found in the Indian state of Rajasthan.
(5) Great Indian bustards are tall birds with long legs and a long neck.
(6) The sexes are roughly the same size.
(7) Males and females are distinguished by the colour of their feathers.
(8) Great Indian bustards are omnivores.
(9) They prey on various arthropods, worms, small mammals, small reptiles, insects such as locusts, crickets, and beetles.
