‘Endangered’ Common Himalayan Herb

Why is it in News?
  • Himalayan Trillium was declared ‘endangered’ by IUCN.
Details:
  • Common Himalayan Herb:
(1) It has medicinal quality. So, it is one of the most traded commercial plants.
(2) It is used to cure diseases like dysentery, wounds, skin boils, inflammation, sepsis, sexual disorders.
(3) It found in temperate and sub-alpine zones at altitutde of 2400-4000 m above sea level.
(4) It found in India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan.
(5) It found states of HP, Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Uttarakhand.
(6) It is also known as ‘Nagchatri’ and grows at 15-20 cm.
  • Reasons for decline:
(1) Overexploitation,
(2) long-life cycle – slow to reach reproductive maturity
(3) Poo capacity for seed dispersal
(4) Highly specific habitat requirements
(5) High trade value
(6) Increasing market demand
