U.S. imposes CAATSA sanctions on Turkey over S-400 purchase
Why is it in news?
- America has imposed sanctions on NATO-ally Turkey for its purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile defence system.
- The sanctions are imposed under Section 231 of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
Details:
- The sanctions were imposed on Turkey’s main defence procurement agency, the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) for engaging in a significant transaction with Rosoboronexport (ROE), Russia’s main arms export entity.
- Last year, the U.S. had removed Turkey from its F-35 jet programme.
- S. has the concerns that sensitive information could be accessed by Russia if Turkey used Russian systems along with U.S. jets.
Impact on India:
- India is also in the process of buying the S-400 from Moscow.
- The issue of sanctions under Section 231 of CAATSA for purchase of Russian arms is of particular interest to India.
About S-400:
- The S-400 Triumf is one of the most advanced missile defence systems in the world.
- It is also known as the SA-21 Growler by NATO nations.
- The system can engage all types of aerial targets including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and ballistic and cruise missiles within the range of 400km, at an altitude of up to 30km.
- It can simultaneously track up to 300 targets and can simultaneously engage 36 targets.
