SC recommends permanent commission for women in Army

Why in news?
  • The Supreme Court on 20 Nov 2019, said the armed forces should consider granting permanent commission to women officers under the Short Service Commission (SSC) before March 2019.

  • Army had notified permanent commission to women officers, who join the forces under SSC, after March 2019.
  • Retrospective effect
(1) Positive side: The court asked the Centre to look at the positive side of granting permanent commission to women officers with retrospective effect, and expand the ambit of the benefit to those serving under SSC before March 2019.
(2) It will show India in a different way on the world platform.
  • Issued notification
(1) The government has already issued notification for permanent jobs to women officers in 10 branches of the Army.

  • Bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud frowned at the Army’s move to grant permanent commission to women officers who joined the forces under the SSC after March 2019, and not to include those who are already serving under the SSC before March 2019.
