Pakistan Speaker hails MFN status for India

Why it is in news?
  • Pakistan's decision to give India the “Most Favoured Nation” status is an example of what can happen when regional cooperation and networking are given full play in South Asia, according to Fehmida Mirza, Speaker of the Pakistani National Assembly.

  • Addressing the fifth Conference of the Association of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians here on Sunday, Dr. Mirza noted that while the nations of the South Asian region shared a range of common problems, they could also work on common solutions together.
  • She said that these can be solved together if our respective Parliaments join hands for a meaningful cooperation through experience-sharing, joint resource mobilisation, and strong networking.
  • It is in this spirit that Pakistan recently agreed to accord the ‘Most Favoured Nation' status to India by replacing a ‘positive trade list' to a ‘negative trade list.'
  • This vital decision will open new vistas of enhanced commerce and trade in the entire South Asia.
  • She also revived the dream of a South Asian Parliament which could “infuse a new life into SAARC exactly in the same manner as the European Parliament remains the driving force behind the European Union.
