HC order on NEET grace marks stayed

Why it is in news?
  • The Supreme Court  stayed a Madras High Court direction to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to grant grace marks to students who suffered from erroneous Tamil translation of 49 questions in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
Concerns
  • A Bench of Justices observed that grant of 196 grace marks  four marks for each of the 49 wrongly translated questions  would cause indelible damage to meritorious students affect the all-India rank list and have a ripple effect on the future of thousands of other students.
  •   pointed out how in one of the questions, the word ‘cheetah’ has been wrongly translated as ‘Sita’ in Tamil.
  • The grant of grace marks may also mean advantage to the Tamil medium students at the expense of those from the State who had opted to answer their exam in English alone.
