Cultural festival for the transgender community

Why in the news ?
  • In order to increase their acceptance in society, a day-long cultural festival of the transgender community was held in Odisha’s Berhampur.

More on news
  • The festival started with screening of a documentary on a group of emancipated third genders of Berhampur city.
  • Transgenders from different parts of the State took part in the cultural festival.
  • Transgenders like Lovely and Bindiya, who were filmed in the documentary, described their own experiences and turmoil before the audience.
  • Children also mingled with them and asked questions about their life and livelihood.
  • This was an attempt to make youngsters realise that third genders are also part of our society and day to day life.
App to help transgenders
  • The Kerala government will roll out a mobile app for transgenders in the State.
  • The decision comes in the wake of few registrations for the transgender ID card scheme. So far, only 300 or so transgenders have registered for the ID cards, many being reluctant to reveal their identity.
  • With mobile phone penetration going up by leaps and bounds, the app will obviate the need for transgenders to visit any government office for registration.
  • They could do it on the app without any apprehension of their gender identity being revealed.
  • The rationale behind CBOs being entrusted with the verification is their grass-root level connections with the community members.
  • The Social Justice Department is also pressing ahead with setting up short-stay homes for transgenders in the districts.
