Luna 25

News

On 19 August 2023 Roscosmos declared an "abnormal situation" on the lander after issuing an unsuccessful command for a short engine burn to move the lander into a pre-landing orbit.

Preliminary analysis indicated that the probe collided with the lunar surface following an excessively long firing of the engine. Attempts on 19 and 20 August to locate and re-establish contact with the spacecraft were unsuccessful.

According to preliminary calculations, Luna-25 entered an incorrect orbit before crashing. A commission was formed to investigate the crash.

About: History of Attempts on Moon Landing

United States - Apollo Program: The United States achieved the first successful crewed Moon landing with Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon. The Apollo program conducted a total of six successful crewed Moon landings between 1969 and 1972.

Soviet Union - Luna Program: The Soviet Union conducted the first successful uncrewed Moon landing with Luna 2 on September 12, 1959. The Luna program also achieved several other milestones, including the first successful soft landing (Luna 9) and the first successful sample return (Luna 16).

China - Chang'e Program: China's Chang'e program has successfully conducted a series of Moon missions. Chang'e 3, launched in 2013, included the Yutu rover, which successfully explored the lunar surface. Subsequent missions, including Chang'e 4 and Chang'e 5, achieved milestones such as landing on the far side of the Moon and returning lunar samples to Earth.

India - Chandrayaan Program: India's Chandrayaan program successfully launched the Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008. The mission included the Moon Impact Probe, which impacted the lunar surface, as well as the discovery of water molecules on the Moon. Chandrayaan-2, launched in 2019, included an orbiter, a lander (Vikram), and a rover (Pragyan), but the lander crash-landed on the lunar surface.

Israel - Beresheet: The Beresheet spacecraft, developed by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, was launched in 2019 with the goal of landing on the Moon. Unfortunately, the lander experienced technical issues during its descent and crash-landed on the lunar surface.

Private Sector - SpaceX: While not a Moon landing in the traditional sense, SpaceX's "Dear Moon" mission is planned to fly a crew of artists and astronauts around the Moon and back using the Starship spacecraft.
