Standing Committee on Statistics
The News
Government sets up panel to review all NSO data.
A Standing Committee on Statistics (SCoS) has been established by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in place of the Standing Committee on Economic Statistics (SCES), whose sole responsibility was to study economic indicators.
The National Statistical Office (NSO) has given the SCoS a broad scope to examine the methodology and findings of all surveys carried out under its auspices.
About
The SCoS will replace a SCES established in 2019 with a new internal oversight system for official data.
The development gains relevance in light of the Economic Advisory Council's (EAC) harsh criticisms of India's statistical apparatus.
