Tap water connections
According to a survey ordered by the Union Ministry of Water Resources to evaluate the performance of the government's flagship Jal Jeevan Mission, almost 62 percent of rural households in India have completely operational tap water connections inside their premises.
More than 80% of homes in Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, and Puducherry have fully operational connections, compared to less than 50% in Rajasthan, Kerala, Manipur, Tripura, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Sikkim.
A household is considered to have a fully functional tap water connection if it receives at least 55 litres of drinkable water per person per day throughout the entire year.
Eight percent of families only received water once per week, compared to nearly three-quarters who had it every day.
Households received water for three hours per day on average, and 80% said that the tap connections were providing them with enough water to meet their needs each day.
The paper brings up the problematic issue of chlorine contamination. 93 percent of the samples were allegedly clear of bacterial contamination, but "most of the anganwadi centres and schools had higher than the permitted range of residual chlorine and indicated incorrect local dosage," according to the report.
