About

As part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a yearly assessment of sanitation, hygiene, and cleanliness in Indian cities and towns was started (specifically under SBA-Urban).

The Quality Council of India (QCI) served as its implementation partner, and it was founded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

The SBA was started (on October 2, 2014) with the goal of having a clean and open-defecation-free India by October 2, 2019.

Rural (SBA-Gramin, supervised by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti) and urban (SBA-Gramin) SBAs were created (SBA-Urban, overseen by the MoHUA).

SBM-U 2.0, which was just introduced on October 1, 2021, is aimed at guaranteeing that everyone has full access to sanitation facilities.

As part of SBM-U 2.0, the goal of a garbage-free India is being pursued.

The initial poll, which was conducted in 2016 and covered 73 cities, now includes 4242. (by the 2020 survey).

Awards

In the category of "more than 100 Urban Local Bodies," Madhya Pradesh was awarded the cleanest state, bumping Chhattisgarh, which had held the title for the previous three years, to second place. The third-cleanest state is Maharashtra.

In a similar vein, Tripura defeated Jharkhand, which had won the prize for the cleanest State for "less than 100 urban local bodies" the previous two years in a row.

Uttarakhand came in third, followed by Jharkhand in second.

While Surat, Bhopal, Mysuru, Navi Mumbai, Vishakhapatnam, and Tirupati obtained 5-star Garbage Free designations, Indore strengthened its position by becoming the first 7-star Garbage Free city in India.

In the Safai Mitra Suraksha category, Tirupati was chosen the finest city, and Haridwar in Uttarakhand was voted the best Ganga town among cities with more over one lakh residents.

The Karnataka city of Shivamogga was dubbed a fast-moving city.
