HARYANA SIKH GURDWARAS (MANAGEMENT ACT), 2014

The News

The Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management Act), 2014 was upheld by the Supreme Court.

About

The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) now has the authority to manage every gurdwara in the state as a result of the judgement.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Management Prabandhak Committee, which has its headquarters in Amritsar, oversees the gurdwaras covered by the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925, which are dispersed over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh (SGPC).

The Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925's regulations on gurdwaras in Haryana were in effect till the Haryana Act took effect.

A part of the Sikh community in Haryana had been calling for a separate committee to oversee gurdwaras in the state rather than the SGPC for almost two decades before the Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management Act) was introduced.

The Supreme Court upheld the legality of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management Act), stating that because the state's Sikh minority's affairs are to be administered solely by Sikhs, no fundamental right guaranteed by Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution is violated.
