In order to simplify the implementation of the National Solar Mission, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of the Government of India established the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI) corporation (NSM).

It is the sole central PSU focused exclusively on the solar energy industry.

The company will now go by the name Renewable Energy Corporation of India, and its scope has been expanded to include all forms of renewable energy (RECI).

In 2011, the SECI was authorised under Section 25 of the Companies Act of 1956 (now Section 8 of the Companies Act of 2013).
