Annabhau Sathe
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar and BJP leader Dr Vinay Sahastrabuddhe are in Moscow to unveil the statue of Lok Shahir (balladeer) Annabhau Sathe at the All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature.
An oil painting of Sathe, who passed away in 1969, will also be unveiled at Moscow’s Indian consulate.
The programme is part of events being held to mark 75 years of Indian Independence and also celebrate the India-Russia relationship.
The Russian Revolution and communist ideology had an impact on his writings.
He belonged to the CPI and o One of the few Communist leaders whose writings were translated into Russian was him.
He founded the Dalit Yuvak Sangh, a cultural organisation, and he began penning poems about the agitations and rallies of workers.
At the same time, the Progressive Writers Association was established on a national basis. Members included Premchand, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Manto, Ismat Chugtai, Rahul Sankrutyayan, and Mulkraj Anand.
In order to stimulate Sathe, the group would translate into Marathi the Russian writings of Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy, and Ivan Turgenev.
It had an ideological impact on him in addition to inspiring him to write novels, short tales, and street plays.
He wrote his debut ballad, "Spanish Povada," in 1939.
At the age of 20, Sathe began writing. He has since produced 32 novels, 13 collections of short stories, four plays, a travelogue, and 11 povadas (ballads).
His writings portrayed the caste and class realities of that era's Indian society.
He founded the Lal Bawta Kala Pathak in 1943 alongside Amar Sheikh and Datta Gavhankar.
The group presented programmes on caste atrocities, class strife, and workers' rights while touring throughout Maharashtra.
He gave Dr. Ambedkar a dedication in his most well-known book, Fakira. He participated in the events that led to the creation of the Indian Peoples Theatre Association in 1943. (IPTA).
In 1949, he was elected president of the Indian Peoples Theatre Association.
Marxism was a major influence on Sathe's writing, but he also highlighted the brutal reality of the caste system.
