INDIRA GANDHI URBAN EMPLOYMENT GUARANTEE SCHEME
The Indira Gandhi Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme has been implemented in Rajasthan with the aim of giving poor and needy families that live in cities financial help through work that will be offered on demand for 100 days per year.
Ages 18 to 60 who live within the boundaries of urban local bodies are able to apply for and obtain jobs in the specified segments.
As the party will promote it as a significant step to solve the condition of urban poor, the effort may be advantageous to the ruling Congress in the lead-up to the 2023 State Assembly election.
The Congress government has hailed it as the country's biggest initiative to deliver guaranteed jobs to the people dwelling in cities, on the lines of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for villages initiated by the UPA government at the Centre in 2006.
Ages 18 to 60 who live within the boundaries of urban local bodies are able to apply for and obtain jobs in the specified segments.
There is no upper financial restriction, but the needy and impoverished will be given preference, especially those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
More than 3.5 lakh persons in the State have enrolled for the programme so far, and 2.25 lakh of them have received work cards.
