Electoral Reforms in India
The EC sent six key proposals to the Law Ministry. We have requested the government to notify the rules for linkage of Aadhaar to voter IDs and also for the four cut-off dates for eligible people to register as voters.
The Chief Election Commissioner of India has recommended key electoral reforms to the Union Law Ministry.
The Recommendations are as follows:
- Issue guidelines for the linking of Aadhaar with voter IDs.
- The election commission has asked the Powers to deregister political parties.
- All donations over Rs 2,000 must be disclosed.
- The commission is given the authority to register organisations and bodies as political parties.
- Limit the number of seats that a candidate contest form.
- Exit polls and opinion polls are prohibited.
It is a constitutional body under Article 324
It was established on 25th January 1950.
It is in charge of overseeing elections to the Indian Parliament and Legislature, as well as the President and Vice-President of the country.
It consists of the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.
The Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners are appointed by the President.
