Press Freedom Index
- India remained at the 142nd position among 180 countries in the World Press Freedom index 2021.
Details:
- The report classified India among the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists.
- India was ranked in the “bad” category, along with Brazil, Mexico and Russia.
- In south Asia, Nepal was placed 106, Sri Lanka 127, Myanmar 140, Pakistan 145 and Bangladesh at the 152nd spot. China was ranked 177.
- In India, around four journalists killed in connection with their work in 2020.
- Journalists in India are exposed to various attack, including police violence against reporters, ambushes by political activists.
- Norway topped the index for the fifth year in a row. It is followed by Finland and Denmark.
- Other countries at the bottom are China (177), North Korea (179) and Turkmenistan (178).
- In 2016, India’s rank was 133, which has steadily climbed down to 142 in 2020.
- The Information and Broadcasting Ministry was delegated to look at the freedom of press index.
