Translocation of last 2 rhinos under IRV 2020
Why is it in News?
- Last 2 rhinos are relocated from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Manas National Park in Assam.
Details:
- It’s an 8th round of translocation.
- Ears of translocated have been notched according to IUCN’s Species Survival Commission guidelines for identification & monitoring.
- Poaching & encroachment has wiped out the rhinos from Manas National Park.
- Translocation had helped Manas to regain world heritage site tag in 2011.
- Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV 2020):
(1) It was designed in 2005.
(2) It is a joint programme of the Department of Environment & Forests, Govt of Assam, WWF India, the International Rhino Foundation and the US fish & wildlife service.
(3) Six rhinos were translocated from Pobitora and re-introduced into the Manas National Park between December 2010 and January 2011 under this vision.
(4) Earlier, under the same programme, two rhinos were translocated from Pobitora to Manas National Park in 2008.
