Biden government restores aid to Palestinians
Why is it in news?
- The U.S. State Department announced restoration of at least $235 million in financial assistance to the Palestinians.
- It is a reversal to the Trump administration’s policy towards the Palestine.
Details:
- S. administration had already announced $15 million in coronavirus relief to the Palestinians in March.
- The new announcement includes:
(1) $75 million in economic assistance to the West Bank and Gaza
(2) $10 million towards ‘peacebuilding’ programmes of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
(3) $150 million in humanitarian assistance to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
About UNRWA:
- UNRWA was established by the UN General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5.6 million Palestine refugees.
- Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
- The UNRWA funds would include educational assistance for at least 5,00,000 Palestinian children living in West Asia.
- India has also contributed one million dollars to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)
