FSSAI cap on Trans Fat

Why is it in News?
  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has amended the rules to cap Trans Fats in food products.
Details:
  • There should not be industrial trans-fatty acids more than 2% by mass of total oils/fats present in the food product.
  • It will be applicable from 1st Jan 2022.
  • 2% cap is step towards elimination of Trans-Fats by 2022.
  • Trans-Fats:
(1) It is found in baked and fried foods, pre-packaged snacks & cooking oils.
(2) It is cheaper than animal fats such as butter.
(3) It increases shelf life of foods and oils on account of decrease in oxidation potential.
(4) It increases risk of coronary heart diseases.
(5) It has been responsible for 5 Lakhs per year.
(6) It increases LDL (bad Cholesterol) and decreases HDL (Good Cholesterol).
