HAL gets contract for 83 LCAs Tejas

Why is it in news?
  • The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was awarded the contract to manufacture 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • While India showcased a range of indigenous military platforms to the world.
Details:
  • The contract was awarded to HAL at the 13th edition of Aero India in Bengaluru.
  • The estimated cost of the contract is ₹48,000 crore.
  • The contract includes 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 trainer aircraft at a cost of ₹45,696 crore.
  • It also includes the design and development of infrastructure sanctions worth ₹1,202 crore.
  • The contract is said to be the biggest Make in India defence contract till date.
LCA Tejas:
  • Tejas is single-seat, single-engine, lightweight, high-agility supersonic fighter aircraft.
  • It is India's first self-made fighter jet.
  • LCA Tejas for Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy is designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
