Why is it in News?
- Union Minister for Road transport and Highways approved a proposal to levy ‘green tax’ on old vehicles.
Details:
- Owners of old vehicle will pay green tax to government for polluting the environment.
- It will be charged at the time of renewal of registration after 15 years.
- It will be dependent on type of vehicle and fuel (diesel or petrol) used.
- There will be higher tax if vehicle is in polluted cities.
- Proposal will go to the States for consultation before it is notified.
