Authorization of biomedical waste
Why is it in News?
- National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed biomedical waste management facilities to obtain authorization from State Pollution Control Boards.
Details:
- It also asked Central Pollution Control Board to ensure strict compliance of waste management rules.
- It should review compliance at least once in a quarter.
- It should apply compensation regime against defaulters.
- Medical Waste:
(1) Biomedical waste or hospital waste is any kind of waste containing infectious (or potentially infectious) materials.
(2) It includes:
(a) Waste that visually appears to be of medical or laboratory origin (e.g. packaging, unused bandages, infusion kits etc.),
(b) research laboratory waste containing biomolecules or organisms that are mainly restricted from environmental release.
(3) Biomedical waste may be solid or liquid.
(4) Examples of infectious waste include discarded blood, sharps, identifiable body parts, other human or animal tissue, used bandages and dressings, discarded gloves, other medical supplies that may have been in contact with blood and body fluids etc
