Supreme Court to hear plea against confession

Why is it in news?
  • The Supreme Court agreed to consider a petition filed by a group of women against the compulsory nature of sacred confessions to priests in Christianity.
Details:
  • The petitioners have filed that “confessions are being abused”.
  • According to the petitioners:
(1) There cannot be a rule to impose confessions on a worshipper.
(2) Ladies are forced to confess before the priest.
(3) The court has to see whether confessions are an integral part of the religion.
(4) Forced confessions violated the right to privacy.
  • Chief Justice said the veracity of such allegations would depend on the individual facts in every case.
