Tide–Rainfall Flood Quotient

Why is it in news?
  • IIT Bombay devised new metric Tide–Rainfall Flood Quotient to understand if coastal city is prone to flood by tidal waves or extreme rainfall.
Details:
  • C40 cities report 2018:
(1) By 2050, over 570 coastal cities will face projected sea level rise by at least 0.5 m.
(2) It will put 800 million people at risk.
  • Tide–Rainfall Flood Quotient:
(1) It is important to understand main drivers of flooding events.
(2) IIT used rainfall data, tidal data and topography of the region.
  • 3 pilot study projects:
(1) Mithi catchment in Mumbai – ‘storm-tide dominated’
(2) Jagatsinghpur in Odisha – ‘Rainfall or pluvial dominated’
(3) Greater Chennai Corporation in Tamil Nadu – ‘Rainfall or pluvial dominated’
  • It will help in better flood risk management.
  • In storm dominated region, flood hazard can be minimized by coastal defence structures such as closure dams, tide breakers etc.
  • In pluvial dominated region, measures such as rainwater storage structures, lakes and detention basis can be prioritized.
