Prohibition of community fishing in Deepor Beel

Why is it in News?
  • The Assam government has imposed section 144 CrPC under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 prohibiting community fishing in and around Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary.
Details:
  • It restricts assembly of more than five persons for community fishing.
  • It causes irreparable and irretrievable damage to the ecosystem of the sanctuary.
  • Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary:
(1) Beel means wetland or large aquatic body in Assamese
(2) It is located about 10 km Southwest of Guwahati city.
(3) It is considered one of the large and important riverine wetlands in the Brahmaputra Valley of lower Assam, India.
(4) It is the only major storm-water storage basin for Guwahati city.
(5) It is considered one of the staging sites for migratory birds in India.
(6) Deepor Beel has also been designated as a Ramsar Site in November 2002 to protect aquatic life forms along with migratory bird species.
