New species of Sun Rose

Why is it in News?
  • Botanists discovered new species of Sun Rose in Eastern Ghats – Portulaca laliji.
Details:
  • Portulaca laljiihas been named to honour the contribution of Lal Ji Singh, an eminent botanist of the Botanical Survey of India
  • Features:
(1) tuberous root
(2) no hair in its leaf axils
(3) a reddish pink flower
(4) prolate-shaped fruits
(5) copper brown seeds without lustre
  • The plants belonging genus Portulaca are classified in the category Sun Rose because they flower in bright sunshine. 
  • Sun rose:
(1) It is a perennial herb, spreading over ground and neighboring vegetation.
(2) It has small, heart-shaped, dark green succulent leaves interspersed with small, axillary, many-petaled, bright pink to purple flowers that open only in sun.
(3) Baby sun rose needs full sun to light shade.
  • When grown in pots, the pots should be at least 8 inches deep.
