Myristica swamp treefrog

Why is it in News?
  • Rare Myristica swamp treefrog found first time in Vazachal Reserve forest in Kerala’s Thrissur forest.
Details:
  • It is an endemic species to western ghats.
  • It is normally found in Agastamalai hills.
  • They are arboreal and active only for few weeks during their breeding season.
  • During this season, males & females aggregate on the forest floor which descend from the trees.
  • Unlike other frogs, their breeding season starts in the pre-monsoon season and ends before the monsoon.
  • After breeding and egg laying, they return to high canopies of trees.
