Why is it in News?
- Entire Lakshadweep islands area have been declared an organic agricultural area.
Details:
- Focus of the administration will be coconuts and its products.
- Value addition, better marketing, round-the-year processing will be focused.
- 10 crore coconuts are produced from islands.
- Coconut processing industry:
(1) Presently only 3 crore nuts are processed leaving 7 crores unprocessed.
(2) Coconut processing industry works for only 6 months when weather is dry.
(3) So, administration decided to introduce dryers and other machineries to utilize nuts during wet months.
- Benefits of declaration of organic areas:
(1) It will give boost to business.
(2) It will increase coconut utilization from current 50% to 70%.
(3) It is expected to increase volume of coconut & its products from 75 Cr to 200 Cr.
- It will harness centre’s ‘One district, One Product’ programme benefits.
