Action Plan on Elephant Corridors

Why is it in News?
  • NGT directed Odisha Government to prepare an action plan within 3 months on 14 identified elephant corridors.
Details:
  • Action plan aims at stress-free migration to jumbos from one habitation to another in the state.
  • Wildlife society of Orissa:
(1) It sought legal action against poaching and violation of Forest Conservation Act 1980 and Indian Forest Act 1927 in proposed corridors.
(2) It seeks to remove unauthorized buildings from the reserve forest which ahd resulted into human-elephant conflict. 
  • Elephant corridors are stretched over approx. 870 sq.km.
  • NGT prohibition order:
(1) All such activities which are not permissible in such eco-sensitive areas, should not be undertaken.
(2) Directed authorities to expediate demarcation of the corridors.
  • State stand:
(1) Assessment of habitat viability is assigned to Asia Nature Conservation Foundation.
(2) ANCF had completed its task and submitted its report.
