Faecal coliform levels above desirable limit in the Yamuna
Why is it in News?
- According to Delhi Government report, the level of faecal coliform is 660 times the desirable limit in Yamuna in Delhi.
Details:
- According to CPCB, desirable limit for bathing river is 500 MPN/100 ml or lesser.
- Faecal Coliform:
(1) These are microbes from human and animal excreta.
(2) They are used as indicators of fecal pollution as they behave like pathogenic bacteria in the environment.
(3) Coliform bacteria generally originate in the intestines of warm-blooded animals.
(4) Waterborne pathogenic diseases is possible with fecal coliform contamination include ear infections, dysentery, typhoid fever, viral and bacterial gastroenteritis, and hepatitis A.
