Decide quickly on ban on onions export: Bombay High Court
Why is it in news?
- The Bombay High Court asked the Union government to decide quickly on its notification prohibiting export of onions.
- The court said it will be in the interest of justice if export of pending consignments of onion with valid shipping bills are allowed.
- The court was hearing a petition filed by Horticulture Produce Exporters Association and others.
Details:
- The Union Government has prohibited the export of all varieties of onion except those cut, sliced or in powder form.
- The ban includes Bangalore rose onions and Krishnapuram onions.
- Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE and Sri Lanka are the top importers of Indian onions.
- India has banned the exports of onion in the wake of its rising prices and its shortage in the country.
