Tigers Increase in Andhra Pradesh
Why is it in News?
- Andhra Pradesh witnessed the rising number of adult and sub-adult big cats during the last five years.
Details:
- Of the 3,980 tigers left in the world, India, with 2,226, accounts for 75%.
- The Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR) is the largest one in the country and it is here the number of big cats is on the rise.
- According to the tiger census, Andhra Pradesh has 48 adult tigers and Telangana 26, in comparison with 68 (2014), 72 (2010) and 95 (2006).
- Indian Tiger/Bengal Tiger:
(1) The length of the tiger from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail is between 2.6 to 3 m.
(2) It weighs between 135-280 kgs.
(3) The average life span of a tiger in the wild is about 14 to 16 years.
(4) The Indian/Bengal tiger is found mainly in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
(5) In India, tigers are found in 19 states.
(6) There are 39 Tiger Reserves in our country today.
(7) The Project Tiger – the first-ever tiger conservation programme launched by the Government of India in 1973.
(8) It is classified as ‘Endangered’ in IUCN list.
(9) It is the national animal of both India and Bangladesh.
