India’s reservoir and monsoon

Why is it in News?
  • India’s major reservoirs may have much more than 10 year average storage this year
More on News
  • Central Water Commission monitors 123 reservoirs
  • Collective stock of 123 reservoirs as of 25 June – 33% of total capacity of all these dams
  • Current stock is almost double compared to June 2019
  • Reasons
(1) Excessive rainfall last year which was country-wide rainfall was 110% of the Long Period Average.
(2) Delayed withdrawal of monsoon
  • Though there is a lockdown since march and resulted into little human activity, particularly industries, there is no evidence to link water situation with lockdown. It is because storage position is good since last monsoon
  • Almost all river basins — Ganga, Indus, Narmada, Tapi, Mahi, Sabarmati, Cauvery, Krishna, Godavari, Mahanadi — have above-normal reserves whereas rivers in the South have normal water stocks
  • The India Meteorological Department has forecast a normal monsoon. So, if there is good rainfall, both spatially and temporarily, the reservoir position will remain healthy through the season.
