Centre plans NRC exercise all over the country: Union Home Minister Amit Shah
Why in news?
- The process of creating a National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be undertaken across India, Amit Shah said in Rajya Sabha on 20 Nov and added that whenever it is done, the exercise will be repeated in Assam.

- He replied following questions in Rajya sabha on NRC and Citizenship Amendment Bill:
- Question: whether citizenship could be granted to certain communities and excluding Muslims, under the NRC:
(1) The NRC has no provision to exclude any person of any religion. All Indian citizens will be included irrespective of their religion.
(2) NRC was undertaken as per the Supreme Court directive.
(3) It will be carried out across the country.
(4) NRC doesn’t discriminate against any Indian Citizen on the basis of religion.
(5) It is just a process to get everyone on the NRC and whenever it is done, it is only obvious that it will be repeated in Assam too
- Question: whether 11 lakh Hindu Bengalis, who were excluded from the NRC in Assam, would be granted citizenship without waiting for the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
(1) Government accepts that refugees – Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Christians, Sikhs and Parsis — who left Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan due to religious atrocities should get Indian citizenship.
(2) Which is why the government will bring a Citizenship Bill.
- Question: 19.6 lakh persons had been dropped from the NRC & it’s been 4 months since the list was published but the process of appeal has not yet started.
(1) People whose names have not figured in the draft list in Assam, have the right to go to the Tribunal.
(2) Tribunals will be constituted across Assam.
(3) If any person doesn’t have the money to approach tribunals, then the Assam government will bear the cost to hire a lawyer.
