GSAT-11
Why is it in news?
- GSAT-11, the heaviest Indian communication satellite built to date, for faster Internet connectivity, is back once again at the Guiana Space Centre for an launch.
- 5.8-tonne GSAT-11 ready for launch finally set for the launch from French Guiana by Europe's Ariane-5 rocket.
GSAT-11
- GSAT-11 is an advanced communication satellite.
- Weight- 5,700 kg.
- Purpose-
- To provide the Indian region superior communication and 12 GBPS connectivity with its multiple spot beams in Ka and Ku bands.
- High bandwidth connectivity - GSAT-11 carries 40 transponders in the Ku-band and the Ka-band frequencies,
- It is capable of providing high bandwidth connectivity with up to 14 GB per second data transfer speed.
- Arianespace, ISRO’s long-time European launch services contractor, has paired GSAT-11 with South Korea’s weather satellite GEO-Kompsat 2A.
- GSAT-11 is part of ISRO’s new family of high-throughput communication satellite (HTS) fleet that will drive the country's Internet broadband from space to untouched areas.
- The broadband domain is now ruled by underground fibre and covers partial and convenient locations.
- Already up in space are two HTSs — GSAT-29 (November 14) and GSAT-19 (June 2017) — while one more is due to join them in the near future.
- They are all to provide high-speed Internet data services at the rate of 100 Gbps (Gigabits per second) to Indian users.
- The HTSs will also be the backbone of pan-India digital or easy Internet-based programmes and services — such as Digital India, BharathNet for rural e-governance, and commercial and public sector VSAT Net service providers.
