Extraction of Mars Oxygen from CO2

Why is it in News?
  • NASA has extracted the oxygen Carbon dioxide in the thin Martian atmosphere.
Details:
  • Extraction was done using device MOXIE.
  • It extracted 5 gram of oxygen which is worth of 10 minutes of breathing for an astronaut.
  • MOXIE:
(1) It on the Perseverance rover.
(2) MOXIE stands for Mars Oxygen In-situ Resource Utilization Experiment.
  • Perseverance rover:
  • It is a part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program.
  • It’s a six wheeled robot that weighs 1040 kgs.
  • Perseverance is the largest, heaviest and most sophisticated vehicle NASA has ever sent to Mars.
  • It will land on Jezero Crater.
  • Black and white plate is installed to honour medical team.
